How FAIR is research in Europe today?

25 augustus 2020

In online workshops, FAIRsFAIR has made an inventory of the recommendations in the report “Turning FAIR into Reality” from 2018: where are we now with making research data FAIR?

The European FAIRsFAIR project has a Synchronisation Force, which seeks dialogue with projects and actors at the interface of FAIR data and the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). The Synchronisation Force has brought together representatives from EOSC Working Groups, European projects and research infrastructures as well as FAIR Champions in a series of virtual workshops from April 29 to June 11, 2020. The workshop participants have shared what they are doing or have already done to put the FAIR principles into practice, based on the well-known 27 recommendations of the FAIR Expert Group. Although the workshop inventory is a snapshot, it is striking to see that a relatively large amount of work is being done on implementing the “priority recommendations” and that other recommendations still require attention. Also, the activities are not equally divided over the projects and research infrastructures. The workshop report makes recommendations on this to the EOSC Executive Board and Governing Board, but also presents additional recommendations “for turning FAIR into reality”.

FAIRsFAIR – Fostering Fair Data Practices in Europe – is coordinated by DANS, and aims to supply practical solutions for the use of the FAIR data principles throughout the research data life cycle. Emphasis is on fostering FAIR data culture and the uptake of good practices in making data FAIR.
