Open access platform for Dutch academic journals launched

29 January 2021

With seven academic journals in the field of social sciences and humanities, the open access platform Openjournals.nl was launched today. The platform is made possible by a collaboration between the KNAW, NWO and the OPUS Foundation. DANS strongly encourages this initiative.

In the pursue for 100% open access, much attention has been paid in recent years to the large international publishers that focus mainly on the technical, natural and life sciences. There are still a large number of independent academic journals in the Netherlands, particularly in the humanities and social sciences. For these high-quality journals, it has often proved difficult to make the transition to open access. Onlinejournals.nl offers a solution for this: the new, easily accessible platform offers journals published in the Netherlands the possibility to publish in open access. It is intended for all journals striving for scientific, peer-reviewed and sustainable open access publishing.

At the time of its launch, seven journals can be consulted via Openjournals.nl, but the intention is to grow to at least 40 journals in three years. Openjournals.nl provides the means and infrastructure to publish all types of peer-reviewed journals in open access – from internationally renowned journals to journals with a regional focus, on the condition that they charge article processing costs (APCs) to authors.
