DataverseNL: the new platform for tree-ring data

16 July 2020

The Dutch Cultural Heritage Agency (RCE) and DANS decided to use DataverseNL from April 2021 as the new DCCD portal for depositing, downloading and (inter) nationally disseminating tree-ring data.

DCCD stands for Digitaal Collaboratorium voor Culturele Dendrochronologie (Digital Collaboratory for Cultural Dendrochronology). This international digital data library of annual growth ring data contains digital growth ring series and mean chronologies, as well as their descriptive and interpretative metadata. The content is developed by research from archaeological sites (including old landscapes), shipwrecks, buildings, furniture, paintings, sculptures and musical instruments. The archive contains data from European institutes, such as the Rijksdienst voor Cultureel Erfgoed (Cultural Heritage Agency), Wageningen Universiteit, Sheffield University, Queens University in Belfast and the Institute of Latvian history. The DCCD is an initiative of the RCE and DANS and is partly funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO).

Findable and accessible

Together with the RCE, DANS ensures that the data from the technically outdated DCCD portal can be found and accessed via DataverseNL from April 2021. DataverseNL makes it possible to store, share and register research data online, during the research period and afterwards. The data is given a persistent identifier (DOI) via DataverseNL, making it easy for others to refer to the dataset through the citation information provided. It will also be possible to add new data again.

Migration activities

Due to the migration activities of the current DCCD platform to DataverseNL, it is no longer possible to deposit data via the DCCD portal from August 17, 2020. However, downloading data remains possible. Migration is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2021.
