The Polifonia project, funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme, has unveiled the Polifonia Web Portal after four years of research and development at the intersection of Musicology, Semantic Web Technologies and Music Information Retrieval.
This portal improves the discoverability of European musical heritage through Linked Open Data and Knowledge Graphs, addressing the problem of fragmented and scattered datasets of musical heritage.
The Polifonia Web Portal consolidates diverse musical resources and data, ranging from historical records to melodic patterns, making it a primary entry point for exploring Europe’s extensive musical heritage.
The portal offers five specialized search sections based on user preferences, supported by autocomplete suggestions and filtering options, enabling efficient research and exploration.
Designed to uncover hidden connections and narratives within the musical landscape, the portal facilitates serendipitous discoveries rather than following pre-determined paths, enhancing the user experience.
Developed collaboratively by institutions such as UNIBO, OU, NUIG, and KCL, the portal integrates several datasets produced by Polifonia partners, including musoW, MEETUPS, CHILD, and others.
The project has also released numerous open-source software tools, datasets, and ontologies, such as Pitchcontext, MELODY, and Sparql Anything, contributing to the broader Polifonia Ecosystem aimed at advancing research in Musicology, Digital Humanities, and Heritage Preservation.
