New in EASY: CLIWOC – databases and ship’s logs

27 July 2018

A new thematic collection is available in EASY: CLIWOC. This is a collection of 283 databases with daily weather observations for oceans in the period 1750 -1850, with accompanying ship’s logs.

The Climatological Database for the World’s Oceans (CLIWOC) is a research project in which weather data from ship’s logs are structurally recorded in databases. The main objective of the project was to obtain worldwide weather data from a pre-industrial period for climate studies. The research focused on British, Dutch, French and Spanish ship’s logs from the period 1750 – 1850. One of the forerunners of DANS, the Nederlands Instituut voor Wetenschappelijke Informatiediensten (NIWI), was involved in the implementation of the Dutch part of this European project from 2001 to 2003.

The databases and corrected data have been published previously, but the original databases in connection with the ship’s logs have not yet been published before. Part of the Dutch input has now been brought together as 283 datasets in the CLIWOC thematic collection. Each dataset has as its theme one ships journey and contains the original database and the (images of) the complete accompanying ship’s logs.
