DEEM’s 2024 Best Paper Award for Croissant Metadata

25 June 2024

The paper on Croissant*, a metadata format that helps standardise machine learning (ML) datasets, has been awarded the Best Paper Award at the 8th Workshop on Data Management for End-to-End Machine Learning (DEEM).

This prestigious workshop is organised by Microsoft in collaboration with various academic and industry partners.

The Croissant metadata format simplifies how data is used by ML tools and frameworks. Croissant makes datasets more discoverable, portable and interoperable, thereby addressing significant challenges in ML data management and responsible AI.

The success of Croissant is a testament to the powerful collaboration between industry and academia. By bridging the gap between cutting-edge research and practical applications, this partnership has made a huge amount of research data available for ML use. Croissant’s integration with major data repositories such as Hugging Face, Kaggle and OpenML underscores its impact, making more than 400,000 datasets accessible for immediate use in popular ML frameworks.

This award not only recognises Croissant’s technical excellence, but also highlights the importance of collaboration in advancing machine learning.
