Although the manual is updated regularly, this time it has been extensively revised and updated with the latest insights and guidelines.
FAIR and accessible
Good preparation is essential for properly depositing your research data. In the manual, ‘Before depositing‘ now contains more detailed information on how to make your data FAIR, how to handle personal data responsibly, and the options available for making data accessible, with open or restricted access. More attention has also been given to domain-specific requirements, making it easier to see what matters in your research area. Our manual now includes links to our ‘Qualitative Data’ and ‘3D Data’ guides, which are specifically aimed at those data communities.
Easier to find and access
A well-documented dataset is easier to discover and can be reused by others. That is why ‘During Depositing‘ in the manual has been updated to include practical guidance on adding metadata and documentation. To help you make your data available properly, we also provide advice on selecting a suitable licence and access restrictions. For this, we refer to our guidebook ‘Depositing Restricted Access Data’ and our ‘Data Access Protocol’ template, which provides additional support for datasets that require access restrictions. Within the DANS Data Stations, you can now set the access restricted for each uploaded file. This enables you to distinguish between openly accessible and restricted files within a single dataset.
Once you have uploaded the data and they have been curated by DANS, the data become available in one of our domain-specific Data Stations. To improve findability and usability, it is important to keep your dataset up to date. ‘After Depositing’ in the manual, explains how to amend or enrich your data, and how to properly handle requests for access. It also explains how to cite data from others responsibly when reusing it.
The updated manual makes it easier to properly manage and share your data, both for your own use and for others. The result is datasets that are easier to find and reuse, which contributes to more sustainable science.
