With the preferred formats, we provide recommendations for file formats that are most suitable for long-term preservation and accessibility. For each data type, we offer advice on the most appropriate options to ensure the data remains accessible and usable in the future. Additionally, explanations are provided for file formats considered less sustainable. The main table includes an overview with links to individual pages containing specific information for each data type and file format.
The file formats and data types included in the guidelines reflect the types of data we frequently encounter. We strongly encourage the use of preferred formats wherever possible. Depositors of datasets containing files not listed are advised to contact DANS for further advice.
Updates and Expansion
Significant additions have been made to the guidelines in recent months. For instance, the ‘3D’ section has been expanded to include recommendations for multiple formats, based on insights from projects such as 4CH and Pure3D. The ‘RDF’ section has also been supplemented with additional explanations. A notable update concerns the ‘Markdown (.md)’ file format in the ‘Formatting language’ section. Previously, Markdown was classified as non-preferred, but following reassessment, DANS has decided to designate it as a preferred format. The updated guidelines on preferred formats can be found here. DANS will continue to maintain and expand these pages as needed.
Data Curation
DANS is one of the few repositories that actively curates deposited data, ensuring its long-term preservation. A team of specialists reviews datasets deposited in the domain-specific DANS Data Stations, assessing file formats among other criteria. They also provide recommendations regarding access controls and metadata, enhancing the discoverability of the data.
Research data deposited in preferred formats is accepted by DANS without question. For any queries or comments, please contact the DANS Preservation Officer, Valentijn Gilissen.
