Surf Research Day 2024
30 May 2024 - 30 May 2024
Location: Prodentfabriek, Amersfoort
Bridging the gap between research and technology, fostering quality and collaboration, and enhancing transparency and accessibility in research form the core principles of the approach of SURF. DANS is hosting multiple sessions at this event.
The first DANS session ‘Open Science + Accessibility = A Winning Formula’ is given by Kim Ferguson, Research Data Management Specialist at DANS.
About this session – When it comes to improving accessibility of research, we can ask some “why’s” and “how’s”. Why make things more accessible? How do we figure out how accessible our work is? How do we improve it? In this interactive session, Kim will discuss together with the group the importance of accessibility throughout the research life cycle and share essential resources that you can use to assess and improve the accessibility of your scholarly work. Some topics that will be covered include research software, publications, education, and citizen science initiatives.
Ricarda Braukmann, Data Station Manager at DANS and Deborah Thorpe, Research Data Management Specialist at DANS hosting the session ‘Improving the Transparency of Data Access Procedures‘.
About the session – The benefits of making research data available for reuse are recognized by many. While some datasets can be openly available, others contain sensitive or personal data limiting the reuse to certain conditions. To improve the transparency of the data access procedures, Ricarda and Deborah have been working on guidelines for depositing restricted access. They also created a Data Access Protocol template that allows a standardized way to specify data access procedures and requirements. In this session, they want to present their approach and discuss with the audience whether it sufficiently addresses the diversity of access requirements in the landscape. They hope to inspire the adoption of a more structured description of data access procedures to enhance the ‘A’ of FAIR: providing the exact conditions under which the data are accessible.
The last DANS session ‘Collaborating on institutional FAIR-enabling and trustworthy research data repositories‘ is given by Maaike Verburg, Research Data Management Specialist at DANS.
About the session – Recent advancements in Open Science necessitate researchers to archive and grant public access to their research data. Consequently, most Dutch universities have established institutional data repository infrastructure to assist researchers in their data archiving and publishing endeavours. However, funding agencies and scientific journals are increasingly requiring researchers to utilize data repositories that are both FAIR-enabling and trustworthy. The European Commission is advocating for the deposition of research data in repositories certified for their trustworthiness, such as those accredited by CoreTrustSeal. Meeting these (certification) standards poses challenges for small institutional repositories, which often lack expertise in long-term preservation, trustworthiness and standards for FAIR-enabling capabilities. Therefore, there is a pressing need for national collaboration among representatives of Dutch institutional data repositories, and expert organisations as SURF and DANS. A roundtable discussion is proposed for individuals interested in data repositories to explore the formation of such collaboration and how to connect to other initiatives such as the establishment of a European network of Trustworthy Digital Repositories. Furthermore, they will exchange insights on crucial topics, including the establishment of preservation plans, implementation of FAIR standards, connecting to European and national developments and guidelines to improve the transparency of, and trust in, repositories.
