Updates to the CESSDA RDM training guides

19 February 2026

Over the course of 2025, the CESSDA Data Management Expert Guide (DMEG) and Data Archiving Guide (DAG) received some updates. DANS is the Dutch Service Provider for CESSDA and is actively involved in their RDM training materials, specifically in revising parts of the DAG and giving feedback on the DMEG.

The DMEG features suggestions from European experts and social science researchers on how to make research (data) more FAIR. This introductory guide provides a general overview of the best practices of research data management for audiences such as junior researchers and data stewards.

DANS reviewed the DMEG last summer to improve its clarity and relevance. DANS collaborated with AUSSDA, the service owner of the DMEG, on processing feedback and correcting broken links and unclear phrases. While the contents of the DMEG remain largely the same, it will be incrementally updated to ensure the content and links are up-to-date and relevant.

The DMEG offers a broader and more general scope than the DAG, which provides guidelines for data archiving specifically. It serves as an introductory guide for new employees of social science data archives. The DAG helps them get a general understanding  of data archives and archiving, such as the purpose of data archives and their procedures. The DAG is freely available online and undergoes continuous revisions to ensure its relevance. Members of the DANS training team are contributing to the revision and restructuring of the content, primarily in its introductory chapter on data archives and archiving.

The DAG and DMEG can be studied on their respective websites at CESSDA: https://dag.cessda.eu/ and https://dmeg.cessda.eu/
