New in the DANS Data Stations: Log in with your ORCID account!

17 January 2025

To deposit data in the DANS Data Stations, you need to create an account. Previously, it was already possible to log in using an institutional account via SURFconext, GitHub, or even Google. Now, you can also use ORCIDs, the unique personal identifiers for researchers.

ORCID, which stands for “Open Researcher and Contributor ID,” is a widely used persistent identifier (PID) for individuals that any researcher can obtain. Like other PIDs, an ORCID offers many advantages. It ensures clear and consistent identification of a specific person and remains unchanged over time. For instance, ORCIDs make it easy to distinguish between researchers with (nearly) identical names. Additionally, by using an ORCID as your login method, you avoid the need to create a new account in our service if you change universities or organisations as a researcher. This is not the case if you use an institutional account.

Automatic addition

When you log in with ORCID, the ORCID in the account is automatically added to the account information in the Data Station.
The ORCID then also appears automatically in the author field of the dataset you deposit in the Data Station. This makes it easy to link all datasets to the depositor.

The ORCID also appears in the dataset’s metadata, making it easier to link other information to the dataset, including for machines. Through the PIDs in the metadata, research output such as datasets can be linked to the creators and institutions involved. For instance, ORCID is working with DataCite and ROR to enrich the so-called PID Graphs where all this information is linked.

In the Data Stations, it is also possible to manually add an ORCID to the author field of a dataset, e.g. for the co-creators of a dataset. Users of DataverseNL must always log in with an institutional account, therefore for this DANS service it is only possible to manually link ORCIDs to datasets.
