Internal evaluation: DANS recognised as “pioneer, connector and innovator in data management”

25 April 2025

DANS maintains a strong national presence and is acknowledged internationally as an innovative contributor in the field of research data management. These are among the findings of an independent review committee in its recent evaluation of the institute. The committee observes that DANS has played a meaningful role in advancing the professionalisation of data management, both in the Netherlands and internationally. The evaluation, conducted in June 2024, covers the period from 2017 to 2023. The full report, along with responses from DANS, the Scientific Advisory Board for DANS (WAR), the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), and the Dutch Research Council (NWO), has now been made publicly available.

“Over the past decades, DANS has developed into a national hub and a key link in international networks focused on data management innovation,” the committee noted.

National and international contribution

The committee highlights how DANS applies its international knowledge and experience to support the Dutch research community. As both a knowledge institute and service provider, DANS facilitates improved access to, sharing of, and reuse of research data—within national settings and through European collaborations. The introduction of the DANS Data Stations—domain-specific digital repositories—is seen as a relevant innovation that better addresses the needs of diverse research communities and encourages interdisciplinary collaboration.

A connecting role in the data landscape

The committee identifies DANS as a natural coordinator within the fragmented Dutch data landscape. Drawing on its broad network, longstanding experience, and collaborative approach, the institute helps to connect a wide range of partners and initiatives. Both KNAW and NWO support this role and have encouraged DANS to articulate in its upcoming 2025 strategy how it intends to further shape this connecting function.

Evaluation framework

The assessment forms part of the regular evaluation cycle for national research institutes conducted by KNAW and NWO and was based on the Strategy Evaluation Protocol (SEP). DANS was evaluated on three core criteria: scientific quality, societal relevance, and long-term viability. In addition, the review addressed topics such as Open Science, staff development, academic culture, and the institute’s response to technological developments including AI.

Training and knowledge exchange

Training and support for data professionals and researchers form a key component of DANS’ activities. The committee encourages further development of this area, with attention to new user groups and additional academic disciplines. This would help extend DANS’ reach and strengthen its function as a centre of expertise.

Looking ahead

“We remain committed to supporting the availability, accessibility and reusability of research data,” says Director Anja Smit. “The committee’s recommendations provide valuable guidance for the strategic choices ahead, and we look forward to shaping our future direction accordingly.”
