DANS Contributions to SURF Research Day

16 April 2025

On 20 May at SURF Research Day, several DANS colleagues will deliver workshops during SURF Research Day.
Nicole Emmenegger and Nils Arlinghaus will lead a session on data interoperability in the humanities and social sciences. Mike Priddy will facilitate a hands-on workshop on supporting FAIR practices using FAIR-Aware. René van Horik will present on the infrastructure behind persistent identifiers, while Cees Hof will contribute to a session on research reproducibility and the use of RO-Crate. Below is a brief overview of the sessions.

Interoperability in SSH: Help Identify Priorities
Nicole Emmenegger and Nils Arlinghaus from the TDCC SSH are organising a series of Interoperability Missions to address key challenges in metadata, ontologies, and data interoperability in SSH research. These missions will focus on improving data quality and accessibility across disciplines. Join the discussion to share your experiences and help shape initiatives that will tackle real research needs.

Using FAIR-Aware to Support FAIR Practices
In this hands-on session, Mike Priddy will demonstrate how the FAIR-aware tool can be adapted to discipline-specific needs around the FAIR principles. The workshop will also cover how data stewards and trainers can apply the tool within their organisations to enhance the understanding and implementation of FAIR practices.

Exploring Persistent Identifier Infrastructure
In this workshop, René van Horik will provide an overview of the components that make up persistent identifier (PID) services, also known as the “PID stack.” The session will focus on evaluating the quality of PIDs and how to choose the most appropriate PID service for specific research needs.

Fighting the Reproducibility Crisis with Automation
This session, organised by SURF, 4TU.ResearchData, the Netherlands eScience Center, and DANS, will explore how automation can support reproducibility in research. The session will cover collaborations between researchers, data repositories, and service providers, focusing on tools like RO-Crate and workflows linking publication to virtual research environments. A panel discussion, hosted by the Netherlands eScience Center and DANS, will follow the presentations, providing further insights and an opportunity to engage on the topic.
