DANS contributing during NDE-programme on WDPD

23 October 2025

On 6 November the NDE (Netwerk Digitaal Erfgoed) is organising a conference in Utrecht on World Digital Preservation Day. The programme offers several sessions on hot topics such as AI and cybersecurity. DANS is contributing with two co-organised sessions; one on certification and another on 3D content.

The first Thursday of November, on World Digital Preservation Day, organisations around the world shine a spotlight on securing the digital legacy. This year’s theme is Why Preserve? Digital preservation practitioners are invited to reflect and share stories on their motivation for preserving digital collections.

NDE programme

The NDE conference will be held in Kanaal30 in Utrecht. From 10.00 until 16.30 you can expect inspiring sessions on several topics, a musical intermezzo and a live connection with the celebrations in Gent. The program concludes with networking drinks.

Guidelines for 3D preservation

In the first round of sessions, DANS research data manager Simon Saldner will be co-presenting Het verleden in 3D verzekerd voor de toekomst (“The past in 3D, preserved for the future”). The 4D Research Lab (University of Amsterdam) and DANS will share a 3D reconstruction of three historical periods of Vlooienburg, now known as the Waterlooplein neighbourhood in Amsterdam. These digital reconstructions are part of a pilot project within the broader PURE3D project, which is developing an access infrastructure for viewing interactive 3D content online in the fields of digital heritage and digital humanities.

Cartographic, archaeological, and architectural-historical research are integrated in these unique virtual models, designed to serve both academic research and the interests of the wider public. DANS contributes to the project by addressing the issue of sustainable data preservation and has developed guidelines for the PURE3D initiative. An initial step has been taken through the publication of the dataset for the historic building Diaconie Weeshuis, which forms part of the Vlooienburg project.

Network Certification

In the afternoon session round 4, “Ontwikkelingen vanuit het Netwerk Certificering” is presented by Remco van Veenendaal of the National Archives. This session was co-organised by DANS research data expert Maaike Verburg as part of the coregroup managing the Signpost Certification and the related Network Certification. The session will discuss the developments around the network and explore community needs to turn the network into a thriving and useful environment for its members.

More information

DANS is always looking to contribute to WDPD initiatives such as this NDE event. This year our data experts and managers Maaike Verburg, Simon Saldner, Valentijn Gilissen and Jetze Touber have helped prepare several sessions.
