Data services remain available during DDoS attacks; structural solution underway

DataverseNL and our Data Stations provide open access to research data and support their reuse. This openness is essential for open science, but also requires targeted measures to limit misuse. 
 
Since the first attack, we have taken a series of measures to maintain availability. Initially, stricter firewall settings were implemented. This was followed by a more targeted approach, analysing not only the origin of traffic but also behavioural patterns. Since mid-March, a more refined form of access control has been in place, enabling better distinction between automated attacks and regular use. While more effective, this approach may still affect international users. 

In parallel, we are working on a structural solution, expected to be implemented around 1 May. This solution focuses on automatically distinguishing legitimate from malicious traffic based on behaviour, without relying on broad geographical blocking. A key principle is thatcontrol over infrastructure and data remains within the Dutch and institutional context.
