CESSDA report on the importance of data citation

5 December 2025

CESSDA has recently published the Monitoring Report 2024–2025: Data Citation Practices. The report examines how CESSDA Service Providers (SPs) facilitate the citation of datasets in their collections in order to encourage correct data citation.

The report shows how European repositories support researchers in correctly referencing datasets, an essential practice for transparent, reproducible and reliable research. As one of CESSDA’s partners, DANS fully endorses the importance of clear and consistent citation practices and contributed information on its own data citation policy for the purposes of this study.

The report shows that an increasing number of SPs actively stimulate users to cite datasets. Many repositories, including DANS, now display a recommended citation on each dataset page, making it easier for users to reference datasets and enhancing the visibility of data in scholarly publications.

Six elements of data citation

At DANS, correct data citation has long been a priority. We encourage researchers to cite datasets in a standardised manner, including the author(s), title, dataset title, global persistent identifier (DOI), data repository or archive, and version. These six elements are also identified by CESSDA as core fields in the report. Proper citation ensures that data producers receive appropriate recognition and that the specific dataset used in a study remains clearly identifiable.

To support this, every dataset published in a DANS Data Station is assigned a persistent identifier (DOI). Each dataset page prominently displays the recommended citation, which can be imported directly into reference management software. Citations can also be exported from the Data Station in standard formats for exchanging bibliographic information, such as EndNote XML, RIS or BibTeX. In addition, our manuals and training activities systematically address the correct citation and reuse of research data.

Progress through collaboration

The CESSDA report demonstrates that European social science repositories are making significant progress towards greater uniformity in data citation. At the same time, there remains room for improvement, as data are still frequently cited incorrectly. Through our collaboration within CESSDA and other international networks, we continue to draw attention to the importance of proper data citation.

Citing data correctly is about more than acknowledgement; it is fundamental to the quality, transparency and trustworthiness of research, and it underscores that data constitute valuable research outputs in their own right.
