Archaeology on the Map

13 October 2025

DANS has updated the map functionality of its Data Station Archaeology. When users search for a given topic for example, a specific period they are presented with a list of datasets whose locations are visualised via the Map tab and can be further explored there.

Datasets at street level

In addition to searching and displaying datasets on the map of the Netherlands, users can now view individual dataset locations on a map that zooms directly to street level. Locations are shown as points or bounding boxes, both at the top of the dataset and within the spatial coverage metadata, depending on what metadata is available.

Improved coordinate model

To ensure as many datasets as possible display accurately, incorrectly entered coordinates in existing datasets such as misplaced decimal points or commas in the Dutch national triangulation coordinate system (Rijksdriehoekscoördinaten), or reversed x and y notations have been fixed. The ingestion model for new data has also been improved to prevent such errors in the future.

RCE/OCW funding strengthens the Data Station

This new geographic interface has been made possible through funding from the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands (Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed, RCE) / Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW). It supports archaeologists in their research and is available to anyone with an interest in archaeology. By enhancing the spatial search and discovery capabilities, the functionality of the Data Station Archaeology has been significantly improved.
