DANS’ workshops at the DCC Spring Training Days
The DCC Spring Training Days will celebrate its 5th edition in 2025. The workshops will take place on various Tuesdays between April and June at SURF Utrecht. DANS is responsible for three workshops on Research Data Management and FAIR Data.
Workshop 1: From researcher to repository and back again
When: Tuesday, 10 June, 13:00–16:00
Facilitators: Valentijn Gilissen & Deborah Thorpe (DANS)
Audience: Researchers and research support staff
In this workshop, we will explore how researchers can select, organise, and describe their datasets to ensure they are well-structured for deposit and future reuse. We will also examine the role of Data Stewards and Data Managers in enhancing the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) aspects of datasets.
- Topics that are included:
- The need for basic curation and the possibilities for enhanced curation
- The dynamic relationship between researchers and repositories
- How the entire process supports the research cycle
Workshop 2: Making qualitative data reusable
Tuesday, 24 June, 09:30–12:30
Facilitators: Ricarda Braukmann & Maaike Verburg (DANS)
Audience: Researchers and research support staff (beginners to the topic)
By the end of this workshop, you will be able to evaluate and improve the reusability of qualitative data at all stages of the research data lifecycle. You’ll leave with a practical toolkit to navigate common challenges when working with qualitative data.
Key questions we will address:
- How do you draft an informed consent form that allows reuse?
- What access level should you select for your data?
- Which file formats best facilitate reuse?
- How do you choose de-identification techniques to balance reusability and data protection?
- How can researchers and data support staff collaborate throughout the data lifecycle?
The main focus will be on interview data, but if you have a project or qualitative dataset you’ve worked with, bring it along!
Workshop 3: Managing and sharing non-personal sensitive data in SSH research
When: Tuesday, 24 June, 13:00–16:00
Facilitators: Michelle van den Berk (DANS) en Pascal Flohr (Leiden University)
Audience: Researchers and research support staff working with sensitive data
In this session, we will introduce different types of non-personal sensitive data in the Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) and discuss best practices for managing and sharing these data in alignment with the FAIR Principles and Open Science.
We will cover:
- Sharing data in secure environments (inspection-only access, no downloads)
- Managing and sharing field notes (both digital and analogue)
- Ethical considerations and the CARE Principles for Indigenous Data Governance
This workshop is part of the project Beyond personal data: a new initiative to support early-career researchers with hard-to-share data, funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO) through the Thematic Digital Competence Centre Social Sciences & Humanities (TDCC-SSH).
About the DCC Spring Training Days
The DCC Spring Training Days is an initiative of LCRDM, among others, offering training and workshops for early-career research data stewards and researchers. Twelve different topics are covered, ranging from Linked Open Data to Pedagogical Skills, and from DMP Engagement to AI tools.
