It is a markup language for describing interactive 3D simulations, objects in networks and virtual worlds. The file format has the standard extension .wrl (world), but .vrml also occurs. The extensions .wrz and .wrl.gz are used when the format is compressed with gzip.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the predecessor of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dans.knaw.nl\/en\/file-formats\/3d\/x3d\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">X3D<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> format and has since been replaced by X3D, which is why VRML is now considered a \u2018legacy\u2019 format.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VRML is a non-preferred format for file type<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dans.knaw.nl\/en\/file-formats\/3d\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3D<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<pre><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/>\n\u00a9 DANS.
