Seminar NARCIS Advisory Board: An Institutional Perspective to Rescue Scholarly Orphans

As part of the international open access week, the NARCIS Advisory Board is organizing a seminar on 31 October with a presentation by Herbert Van de Sompel: An Institutional Perspective to Rescue Scholarly Orphans.

Scholarly Orphans

Increasingly, scholars across disciplines and throughout the research life cycle are using a wide variety of web portals such as GitHub, FigShare, Publons, and SlideShare to conduct aspects of their research and to communicate research outcomes. Institutions are usually not aware of the existence of artifacts created by their researchers in online portals. Also, these portals, whether dedicated to scholarly use or general purpose, exist outside of the traditional scholarly publishing system and no infrastructure exists to systematically and comprehensively archive the deposited artifacts. In previous work it has been shown that without adequate infrastructure, such scholarly artifacts will vanish from the web in much the same way and with similar frequency regular web resources do.

In the “Scholarly Orphans” project, which Herbert Van de Sompel led while still at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, they assumed that research institutions are interested in collecting scholarly artifacts created by their researchers. As such, they devised an experimental institutional pipeline [1] to automatically track, capture, and archive these artifacts. In this talk, Van de Sompel will provide a motivation for the Scholarly Orphans work, describe/demonstrate project results, and indicate how aspects of this functionality could be provided in NARCIS.
