KNOWeSCAPE was a European project in which information scientists worked together with physicists and visualized how knowledge is shaped. The main target of this ‘COST-Action’ was improving the analysis of extensive knowledge domains, and of the underlying organising systems. The combination of concepts from the complexity theory and knowledge organisation provided an insight into the collective, self-organising nature of human knowledge production. This research supported the development of new principles and methods of data representation, processing and archiving, for instance by creating interactive knowledge landscape maps. Wikipedia and the collections of libraries, archives and museums served as study objects.
