Life sciences

The (data) developments within the life sciences rapidly evolve and the life sciences are responsible for the production of a very significant section of the Dutch research data. Next to the standard data services, DANS offers the opportunity to use its expertise and knowledge for specific projects and/or (data) questions within the health and life sciences. Different organisations and networks already use the DANS data services and the training and consultancy opportunities. DANS aims to increase the interaction with the life sciences in the coming years, focussing on data for interdisciplinary studies relevant for the life, humanities and social sciences. Background, state of affairs and plans with and for the life sciences are captured in the policy document DANS and the Life Sciences (Dutch only).

The use of EASY, DataverseNL and NARCIS:

  • IC data from the Amsterdam UMC are archived in EASY: News item
  • Data about ticks and tick bites are accessible through the DANS archive: Dataset
  • The research institutes NIOO and NIOZ share biological data using DataverseNL: Datasets
  • NARCIS increases the findability of healthcare data: News item

  • Within the Helis Academy, DANS trains life science data stewards: News item
  • DANS joined forces with ecologists and ethologists to train on biodiversity data: News item

Organization and Policy:

  •  DANS acts as an advisory member to the Dutch Techcentre for Life Sciences (DTL): Website
  • With funding organisation ZonMw, DANS collaborates on FAIR data and DANS is a recognised Technology Hotel: Website

For researchers, data professionals and data managers within the life sciences, DANS offers various possibilities for collaboration and specific services, such as:

  • Grants for small data projects: this subsidy of up to 10.000 euros is intended to encourage researches to archive and share their research output as open access data.
  • DANS as a Technology Hotel: offers life science researchers facilities to manage, store and share their data in an optimal way for their specific research.
  • A data partner for your national, European or international project: contact the  team to discuss the possibilities.
  • Automatic data archiving from your own repository: DANS  give advice and inform you about the costs.
  • Training related to Research Data Management, repository certification or other data subjects: the DANS training team is eager to discuss the possibilities.
