Update to Data Stations and DataverseNL software

25 March 2026

The DANS Data Stations and DataverseNL make use of the open-source Dataverse software. This software is actively developed, with new releases published several times a year.

In March 2026, DANS installed Dataverse 6.8 and 6.9. These versions introduce new features, improvements and corrections for users of the Data Stations and DataverseNL.

Key developments in Dataverse 6.8

Open OnDemand integration

Open OnDemand is a web interface for High Performance Computing (HPC) systems. With this optional feature, users can create datasets in Dataverse and upload files directly from an Open OnDemand environment via the OnDemand Loop integration tool, developed by IQSS at Harvard University. Files can also be downloaded from Dataverse through this tool. This can, for example, be used with Snellius, the Dutch national supercomputer operated by SURF.

Fixes and new API endpoints

A bug has been resolved where expired curation status labels were not removed. New API endpoints have been added for retrieving and creating templates, retrieving linked collections and datasets, managing notifications, and retrieving URLs for use in plug-ins.

New in Dataverse 6.9

Role assignment history

Dataverse can now track the history of assigned roles. Administrators can see which roles have been granted or revoked, to whom, and when these changes took place. This supports the management and auditing of access rights and provides insight into how they evolve over time. The information is available via an additional menu on the permissions page for datasets and collections (‘Role Assignment History’) and can also be exported via the API in CSV and JSON formats.

Storage limits for individual datasets

For DataverseNL users, it is now possible to set storage limits at dataset level. This functionality was already available for collections. When a limit is set, the API can be used to retrieve the remaining storage space or number of files. This feature is optional.

Support for COAR (Confederation of Open Access Repositories) relationship notifications

Dataverse supports an optional feature for sending and receiving notifications within the COAR Notify Relationship Announcement Workflow. This allows Dataverse to send a message to a selected repository indicating that a dataset has been published with a related publication included in the metadata. The receiving repository can then link the publication to the dataset. Conversely, Dataverse can receive notifications from other repositories announcing relationships between their publications and datasets.

Corrections and new API endpoints

Issues related to displaying questions in the guestbook have been resolved, and retrieving guestbook data is now faster for collections with high download volumes. New APIs have been added for managing dataset licences and file access requirements.

The Data Stations and DataverseNL are data services provided by DANS that make use of the open-source Dataverse software developed by Harvard University. The international Dataverse community, including DANS, continuously contributes to the further development of the software.

DANS ensures that users of its data services have access to at least the second most recent version of the Dataverse software (the latest version minus one).
