Projects

Reflection of a broad field of activity

DANS takes part in numerous projects with the aim of promoting the scientific data infrastructure in the Netherlands and Europe. Sometimes as project leader, on other occasions as main contractor, and yet again as sub-contractor or supplier of a specific service.
These projects are financed in a variety of ways. For example, DANS cooperates in projects for which subsidy has been requested from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), Senter Novem or the European Union, but also partly or fully finances other projects from its own budget. DANS’ contribution to a project can vary from the supply of ICT services to mapping the data needs within an entire discipline.
This page offers concise information on the projects in which DANS works or cooperates as well as the name of the contact person for each project. He or she will be happy to provide you with further information.
A number of projects have not yet been documented, but this page will be updated within the near future to ensure a complete overview.

EASY Electronic Archiving SYstem

To facilitate exchange of research data between researchers and to give them the opportunity to store their data in a safe and permanent manner, DANS developed the Electronic Archiving System. This system has been online since February 2007 and is being constantly improved by the DANS development team.

Digital Collaboratory for Cultural Dendrochronology (DCCD)

The Digital Collaboratory for Cultural Dendrochronology is an international repository for data related to tree-ring research.

Dendrochronology studies the annually varying ring widths in wood. Tree-ring patterns in wood from the cultural heritage contain unique information about former chronology, social economy, the historical landscape and its uses, climate and wood technology.

EASY II - Electronic Archiving System on Fedora

The project 'EASY On Fedora (EOF)' is the follow-up to EASY. EOF uses Fedora archiving software (not to be confused with the Linux-based operating system Fedora). The aim of the EOF project, apart from realising an important upgrade of the existing EASY, is to establish an improved and easily expandable software infrastructure as the basis for various solutions.

MeMO - Medieval Memoria On-line

MeMO is the follow up to Memoria in the picture (Memoria in Beeld). Memoria are medieval works of art (paintings, stained-glass windows, memorial tombs, etc.) that played a role in the commemoration of the dead. In collaboration with the University of Utrecht, DANS developed a database which is searchable through an associated website. This database contains descriptions of 524 memorial images, including photographs. This project was called Memoria in the picture (Memoria in Beeld), the site is publicly accessible: www.let.uu.nl/memorie/index.php

Data Seal of Approval

Data Archiving & Networked Services (DANS) has been working on the data seal of approval since 2005: minimum requirements for (scientific) data archives. In consultation with various archives and scientific institutions, the first version was distributed within limited circles at the end of 2007. Early 2008, the Data Seal of Approval (DSA) was presented internationally.

Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities (DARIAH)

In the Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities (DARIAH) project, a ‘digital workbench’ will be realized for arts and humanities scientists in Europe. Researchers can go to DARIAH to find data and tools, archive their data, exchange information and advice in the field of metadata and digitalizing.

Getuigen Verhalen (Telling Witnesses)

Until the end of 2009, hundreds of eyewitnesses to the Second World War will be interviewed. These interviews are part of the program "Erfgoed van de Oorlog". The project "Getuigen Verhalen" is a component of this program. The core collection of interviews will be archived and unlocked by DANS.

Costs of Digital Archiving vol. 2

This project aims at generating a cost model for archiving and disseminating digital scholarly datasets relevant to the circumstances of DANS. It is a follow-up of the work done by Kevin Heerema and Anna Palaiologk, which resulted in a first draft cost model based mainly on the OAIS reference model. It is anticipated that the new and improved model will assist the management of DANS in achieving economic sustainability. Material costs need more attention, but the most challenging task in the new project is implementation of the model described within the organisation, in particular in the current time reporting systems and other planning tools.

The Harvest of Malta

A few years ago, NWO awarded subsidies to four university projects for lifting the information from the so-called Malta excavations to a higher scientific interpretation level. During these commercial excavations, as carried out within the framework of the new archaeological legislation, there often is insufficient time and space to arrive at a scientific synthesis. Four universities will now get the chance to integrate this so-called 'Harvest of Malta' to one coherent view of the past.

PersID

The PersID initiative is designed to guarantee durable access to digital scientific and cultural heritage.
